ALMOST one third of residents in the greater Flagstone region say yes to public transport on weekdays, according to preliminary results of a new online survey conducted by Flagstone developers Peet Limited.
The news comes after residents expressed disappointment at the continued delays in the delivery of a bus service by the suburb’s developer and the state government.
According to Peet, almost 300 households took the survey, representing around 1000 residents.
The aim was to gauge community demand for bus services, including priority destinations and timetable choices.
Peet CEO and managing director Brendan Gore said although Flagstone residents relied on private transport, with 88 per cent having access to two or more vehicles, 29 per cent of respondents said they would consider taking public transport to work or school on weekdays.
Between 11 and 16 per cent said they would use a bus service on weekends.
“The study shows the biggest demand is for a weekday commuter service from Flagstone to the main transit hubs at Springfield train station (43 per cent) or the Browns Plains bus interchange (38pc),” Mr Gore said.
“On weekends, the most popular destinations are the shopping and entertainment centres at Grand Plaza in Browns Plains, or the Springfield and Jimboomba town centres.”
State responsibility
According to Mr Gore, the survey results would be shared with Translink and the Queensland government to help plan future services in the area.
“This data will be useful in helping to plan the most effective and efficient service for the Flagstone community,” he said.
“Greater Flagstone is growing and the state government is responsible for providing public transport.
“Population size and demand are key factors in determining any new bus service.
“Peet also has a responsibility to contribute to public transport by the time the 200th home is occupied in the new western development area. Depending on how sales go, we are expecting that will happen around mid 2018.
“We are not sure yet exactly what the solution will look like so now is the time to do some careful research and planning,” he said.
Details of the public transport survey were shared with Flagstone residents at a community open house session on June 24.
