A NEW works program prioritising roads that require upgrades to kerb and stormwater drainage has been announced in this week’s Logan City Council (LCC) budget.
A commitment of $2 million annually was announced by city treasurer councillor Trevina Schwarz, who said the program was to ensure that main roads servicing schools and new developments in Logan received attention.
“We have local roads in parts of our city like Jimboomba that take increasing traffic for schools, new housing estates and shops but don’t have adequate kerb or stormwater drainage.
“That forces school children, cyclists, people with prams and pedestrians in those areas to walk on the shoulders of busy roads, which is unsafe and unfair.
“This program makes sure those roads are captured in our works program and given adequate upgrades to support the increasing number of vehicles and pedestrians that use them.”
City infrastructure committee chairman councillor Phil Pidgeon said the funding was: “...to ensure roads classified as ‘local’ still receive the level of maintenance and upgrades they require to meet the expectations of the community that uses them.”
Cr Pidgeon said the program would complement the existing Gravel Roads and Shoulder Sealing (GRASS) program, which received $1.6m in ongoing funding in the budget.
