AN upgraded Jimboomba Park was opened to the community on Saturday May 20, and locals turned out to experience the $4.5 million improvements.
On hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony were state member for Logan, Linus Power, Logan City mayor Luke Smith, councillor Trevina Schwarz (Division 11) and councillor Steve Swenson (Division 3).
The project was jointly funded with $3 million from Logan City Council (LCC) and $1.5m from the state government under its ‘Get Playing Plus’ program.
“The facilities at this site will not only cater for local residents but will also attract visitors and competitors from across Queensland and internationally,” Cr Schwarz said.
The park upgrade includes Logan City’s first undercover equestrian arena, which was put to immediate use by the Jimboomba Pony Club’s junior gymkhana.
Support for other local clubs
Sporting clubs throughout the region were heavily impacted by recent flooding, and Mr Power has announced funding applications for the Queensland government’s ‘Get Playing Places and Spaces’ program.
According to Mr Power, $15 million is available to local sport and recreation organisations through these programs.
“Our local community sports clubs have had some great projects funded under these grants and I encourage clubs to start preparing applications now,” he said.
Applications will open on June 19 for sports clubs to apply for a grant up to $150,000 to upgrade or build new infrastructure or facilities.
“If there are any clubs out there who need better lighting, improved fields or new change facilities to encourage more female players to get involved, I encourage them start preparing their applications now.
“We’re proud to be able to provide more opportunities for Queenslanders to participate in sport and active recreation at the grassroots level – to get more people outdoors, staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” he said.
“For clubs in disaster affected areas who apply for the $150,000 infrastructure grant, the state government is waiving the requirement for clubs to contribute to the project, and any club who was successful in receiving a Get Going Clubs grant last year will be eligible for the grant again this year.”
Applications close on August 11.
