THE MEANING of life is one of the major themes of a new feature-length tragicomic film currently shooting in the Jimboomba region, with a strong local element to the production.
First-time director Jordan Buck spoke to the Times about the progress of the shoot and explained how locals can contribute to the success of the production.
“In Place of Grace has a couple of running themes. The first is about coming to terms with death and all the questions that follow in the wake of a terminal illness. In particular, the meaning of life,” Buck said of the screenplay by Jimmy Sky.
“Second, the clash across humanity of conflicting ideologies, such as various religions with each other, or those religions with atheism, and what we all have in common despite those differences; put simply, the search for a fulfilling or meaningful life.
“The film also deals with high-functioning alcoholism, depression, and the unusual moments that change the course of our lives.”
Buck credits Jimboomba local, executive producer and actor Nick Neild with bringing the production to the Logan region.
“Nick was kind enough to offer his home and his property for lodging, location shooting and catering, as well as playing a role in the film.
“He was so impressed with In Place of Grace that he threw in some financial backing as well.”
According to Buck, there has been talk of seeking a distribution deal for cinema.
“There was also a discussion about an on-demand TV direction.
“For us, the wider the audience, the better, as this isn't about money, it's about sending a nice message, telling a moving story, and entertaining people.
“We are also looking to do a screening of the final film for the locals here in Jimboomba for helping up us letting this come to life. We are hoping to get the word out and bring to the Australian public a movie audiences will love.”
Key creatives on the project include leading actor Belinda Romero in the role of Momo, and Michael Deed as her love interest, Dex.
“American talent and Brisbane local James Kearney features as wise old Abe,” Buck said.
“The film will be shot by Helensvale-based director of photography Ben Gibbs and produced by Incan Maya Media.”
Jimboomba locals have also been appearing as extras.
“There will certainly be representations of this area in this film,” Buck said.
“You might not see any familiar landmarks, but if you're extremely familiar with the region, you may recognise a few things.”
