Jesica Draper, Sam Windsor and Felila Kia have done their state and their club Jimboomba Little Athletics proud at the Australian Little Athletics Championships in Sydney last month.
The three were part of a select team of just 13 athletes picked to represent their state at the competition, bringing home seven medals between them.
Windsor, who currently trains four times a week, won gold in the under 13s high jump with a 1.71-metre jump and a bronze in the 4x100m relay.
Windsor said he was surprised to have won his pet event the high jump after feeling drained following the 200m final.
It was just one of five events he competed in, including the 200m heat, discus and triple jump for which he was asked to fill in at the last minute by team organisers.
“I was confident, but I doubted myself after I came back from the 200 final, because I felt really tired,” he said.
“I jumped 1.71m, missed 1.76m just; 1.75m is my PB (personal best).”
Draper, who started with the baton in the under 13s girls 4x100m relay, said she was thrilled to have given her teammates a solid start in their quest for a medal when they finished with a silver.
“I did come around the first bend and I took over a girl in front of me, and I was like ‘oh my god what’s happening?’, because I was the slowest in our team, so I was surprised,” she said.
Draper also attained a state record when she claimed bronze in the under 13s girls 200m hurdles event with a time of 28.35 seconds.
Kia was a dominant force in the throwing events at the titles, scoring a personal best to win the gold in the under 13s discus, while narrowly missing out on gold and claiming silver in shot put and javelin.
I threw 48.09m, it was a two-metre PB, it was a good time to throw a PB,” she said.
“In shot put I was a couple of centimetres off, like 14 or 12cm or something like that, and she got me on the last throw. It was disappointing but it’s not my main event.
“I do train for it but it was my first event and I knew I could come stronger in the other events.
“In the javelin I was a few centimetres off gold as well.”
