A HORROR comedy film featuring Jimboomba and Scenic Rim residents in small but pivotal roles is set to premiere in Brisbane this month.
The Us and Them premiere will be held at the Maritime Museum in South Brisbane on Saturday, May 27.
Filmed at the Beaudesert Hotel in June last year, the movie tells the tale of a bride and groom who are trapped in a honeymoon suite during a zombie apocalypse and resort to playing Russian roulette to escape their dire situation.
Cast Me A Shadow Productions co-owner Russ Welsh said he wrote the script and worked with producers Wendy Spencer and Nicholas Neild, from Jimboomba, to make the film.
More than 150 extras, including Jimboomba and Beaudesert residents were on set for two days, playing their roles from late at night until the early hours of the morning.
Mr Welsh said he had three different locations in mind for the making of the film before Beaudesert won his heart.
“My sister is marrying a man from Beaudesert and my future brother-in-law recommended the place,” he said.
“I had a look at three different rooms in the Beaudesert Hotel and the third room was exactly what I imagined it to be when I was writing the script.”
The Brisbane-based writer and director said he was impressed by the Scenic Rim and Jimboomba residents’ performances.
“I was surprised at how professional they were,” he said.
“I told them what to do and they took it on board as if they had done this their whole lives and it was great.”
Mr Welsh said there were more than 60 extras from Beaudesert, Jimboomba, Beenleigh and the Gold Coast playing zombies with a select few from Beaudesert who scored featured extra roles.
“It was a great crew to work with and some extras from Jimboomba and Beaudesert feature in small but pivotal roles in Us and Them,” he said.
“After I shot the film, they were still talking about their experiences for about at least four months afterwards and it was one of those sets that went so well.”
Mr Welsh said he was pleased to have American contacts in the industry who are interested in the film.
“Americans love their zombie stuff and they were blown away by it – they said it was amazing,” he said.
“It’s so dark and the comedy elements come from the situation the characters are in and the mistakes made during filming are purposely left in.”
“People are definitely going to be gobsmacked by it.”
