THE spirit of the Anzacs was honoured at Jimboomba State School on Friday.
While war and sacrifice might be adult concepts, it was students who led the ceremony.
School captains Sophie Hughes and Grace Hall delivered the Anzac Day tribute as the catafalque party stood guard, with a prayer recited by Polla Dayong afterwards.
Jimboomba and Districts Cadets’ Brett McCreadie reminded children to honour those who served and the fallen by living their lives the best they could.
While choir performances brought brightness, the oration of In Flanders Field and The Ode by students Ashleigh Hodges, Teagan Dare and Ashlee Langford meant the service was a solemn one.
But it was Flagstone State Community College student Jack Wiley’s stirring rendition of the Last Post and Reveille which captured attention, punctuated by a minute’s silence.
Senior school deputy principal Karen Kuskey said the annual Anzac Day tribute service was important to the school’s culture.
“The ceremony has a sombre tone that pays respect to fallen heroes,” she said.
The Ode
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”
