The newshounds are out and about at Emmaus College with the recent formation of the Journalism Club.
In their first term as a fully fledged club, the students from year 7 to year 10 have had four articles published in the newsletter.
They hope to expand further this year, by becoming their own recognised brand and making their own digital platform designed for student readers.
Editor and founding member Tariana Olive said she had the idea to start the club last year and was thrilled when they had approval to become a published writing group.
“By taking part in this we are saying something that we wouldn’t normally have the chance to say to the whole school,” she said.
“You get to see a different perspective on things that are happening around the school by writing these stories.”
The club meets twice per week to discuss story ideas and forward plan for their expansion.
Year 7 student Mark Hovan, who is an avid creative writer, said he liked the different mix of people who came to the club.
“It’s much easier to write about what you have chosen to write about,” he said.
Teacher librarian Chris Barker said she was currently a facilitator for the group who did the final checks, but would pass that role to Tariana next term.
“If you want something done you ask the busy people, and that is who has joined our club,” she said.
“This club gives them the opportunity to pursue their creativity.
“It also opens up new friendships and getting them outside of their comfort zone.”
