Greenbank Football Club’s new under 10 girls team have had quite the week, not only winning 3-2 against Moggill but also training with a former W-League professional.
Former Adelaide United player Lorena Maggio, who currently plays in the National Premier League, visited Greenbank on Wednesday with teammate Teagan Lynch to run the under 10s training session.
Maggio began the session by addressing the young players before combining with Lynch to put the girls through their paces.
Greenbank FC club president Anthony Phung said the visit by Maggio and Lynch provided a boost to the players and the club.
“This is the first time Greenbank FC has had a full girls team in the MiniRoos age groups, so having players of the calibre of Lorena and Teagan down to address the girls and run the session was vitally important,” he said.
"We want to create a safe atmosphere where young girls can play and engage with football positively. To have both Lorena and Teagan down and have them engaging with our girls is fantastic.
"We want the girls to strive to achieve the best they can, and for that to occur we need to have positive role models for them. Sport is a very male-centric, so any opportunity for our young females to engage with positive role models is truly treasured.”
Before Maggio arrived the team was briefed by club coach Gus Tringale on the former Adelaide player’s footballing achievements, which triggered a huge round of applause from the under 10s upon her entrance.
Team coach Andrea Brown said it was a wonderful opportunity for the girls to learn from players who had played and trained with some of the best minds and players in the country.
"These are players who have played at the highest level in Australia and for them to be so willing to give back like they have tonight is wonderful,”
The visit was organised as part of Females in Football week, Brown was confident the training session would not be the last they would see of Maggio and Lynch.
“We are extremely excited and are looking forward to seeing more of Lorena and Teagan throughout the season,” she said.
