Jimboomba Little Athletics scored its best ever result at the state championships over the weekend with club members winning 40 medals and three athletes being selected for the prestigious U13 team which will contest the national championships in Sydney next month.
Felila Kia, Sam Windsor and Jesica Draper all won state gold medals at the championships and were selected for the U13 team based on their versatility. Only 13 girls and 13 boys are chosen from throughout Queensland.
Felila Kia won gold medals in discus, javelin and shot put as well as placing second in hurdles. Sam Windsor won his high jump and javelin and picked up silver medals in discus, shot put and 200m. Jesica Draper won the 200m hurdles and placed third in the 200m.
Jimboomba had 56 athletes who competed at the three-day Little Athletics state championships which attracted over 2000 competitors in the U9-U17 age groups.
Centre Manager, Peta Smith, said it was a great result for the local club.
“Our athletes won 16 gold, 14 silver and 13 bronze medals and most achieved personal bests. It was a great ending to a wonderful year for the club.”
Jimboomba’s other state gold medallists included Camryn Newton-Smith who won the U17 100m hurdles, high jump and long jump as well as placing second in javelin and 300m hurdles, and Talosaga Kia who won gold in the U16 girls discus and shot put.
Other gold medallists in boys events were Ben Roberts in the U15 javelin, Jayden Ruska in the U16 800m, Mathew Stockham in the U16 boys heptathlon, Motootua Kia in the U11 boys discus and Jack Addley in the U11 boys javelin.
Silver medallists were Lilly Pearce U14 girls high jump and shot put, Sam Emblen U17 boys 300m hurdles, Lilly, Tyrone Mackinnon U16 boys heptathlon, Jack Schultz U9 boys high jump, and Ben Roberts U15 boys triple jump.
Bronze medallists were Fletcher Pearce in U13 boys javelin, Tiarnah Isua U13 girls 800m, Laura Kenny U16 girls 1500m and Ryan Hanser U17 boys 300m hurdles.
Athletes who made finals in their events included Matthew McManus, Jonas Hannam, Connor Addley, Zygmin Irving, Maddison Aitkin, Gemma King, Phoebe Balmforth, Dean Brettoner, Nathan Cross, Erin Gallagher, Abby Howden, Lachlan Mead, Cooper Rennie, Jamie Roser, Imogen Roberts, Angela Roberts, Justin Sarah, Lachlan Tate and Kelsie Willoughby.
Jimboomba Little Athletics will be holding its annual trophy presentation on Sunday April 23 starting at 11am followed by the AGM.
