In the wake of recent research naming Logan as the third largest hotspot for vehicle theft in Queensland, police have confirmed vehicle theft has increased in the local area.
However, the rate of the thefts in Logan are below state average.
Research by carsafe.com.au showed that 2015/2016 saw the biggest increase in stolen vehicles across Australia compared with previous years, with 148 vehicles stolen each day, costing $500 million over 12 months ending September 30, 2016.
Realistically, the crime rate increase is in line with the population growth.

In the third highest ranking, 17.3 per cent of all vehicles thefts occurred in Queensland.
Victoria placed first with 35 per cent of the thefts.
Logan was named as the third highest vehicle theft hotspot in Queensland, only beaten by Brisbane City and the Gold Coast.
Logan Policing District Detective Acting Inspector Peter Waugh said while vehicle thefts had increased only slightly, any rise was a concern.
He said police were continuing to do their work in the area.
“Realistically, the crime rate increase is in line with the population growth,” he said. “We find that break and enter offences often correspond with motor vehicle theft cases.”
Detective Acting Inspector Waugh urged all residents to ensure their homes and vehicles were secure.
“Do not leave keys in plain sight or leave a handbag on the kitchen table,” he said.
“Even leaving keys on key hooks makes it easier for vehicle theft to occur.
“If you have a garage put your car inside it, or put your vehicle on your property and close your gates.”
Spokesperson for insurance comparison company Compare the Market Abigail Koch said it was important for people to know where theft hot spots were.
“(This is) so they can be extra vigilant, especially in the theft ‘red zones’ within each state,” she said.
“But it’s not just about being extra aware, it is also important for drivers to take the necessary preventative measures to reduce the chances of suffering a vehicle loss.
“Not taking these extra precautions can void your insurance policy, which could end up costing you the value of your car.”
The data suggested cars and light commercial vehicles were the top vehicles stolen.
