A Yarrabilba resident is angry Lendlease has failed to notify locals about the removal of nearby asbestos.
Gary Thompson, who has lived within the community for more than two years, said he was “shocked” to discover asbestos removal signs at a sectioned off site on Adler Circuit, while out on a morning walk.
The resident said he witnessed several construction workers moving and dumping loose material from the site into tip trucks, with very few wearing personal protective equipment.
“I just thought you have got to be joking. You have got to absolutely be joking,” he said.
“Asbestos can kill you.”
Mr Thompson said his biggest fear was material, only located at one site in Yarrabilba, spreading to other parts of the community.
“I feel deceived and I feel sorry for anyone who has bought a house here,” he said.
“Lendlease hasn’t said anything about this and nobody has heard anything.
“The only thing we get are these signs, and I really think the community deserves the right to know and be notified of what’s going on.
“From what I’ve been told, this used to be an ex-army base and that could be where the asbestos has come from.”
When asked by the Times about Mr Thompson’s concerns about witnessing a lack of personal protection equipment on workers at the site, as well as the general safety of the community, a Lendlease spokesperson attributed the following statement:
“A small quantity of asbestos was identified at Yarrabilba,” the spokesperson said.
“This material is being removed by specialist hazardous experts in accordance with strict regulatory requirements, and within an exclusion zone to protect workers and the community.”
Lendlease did not provide a response to questions from the Times regarding the site being declared asbestos free.
