The multi-million resort project, developed by Australian SN International Investment Group, will become the biggest tourism infrastructure project in the City of Logan’s history.
The Lakes development – featuring a five-star hotel, convention centre, restaurant and bar, sports facilities, a chapel, and mooring for yachts and powerboats – will be built on Riedel Road at Carbrook.
Logan City Council expected the Lakes resort to create about 600 jobs and inject $53 million into the region each year.
Division 10 councillor Darren Power, who was against the development, said he was concerned for the future and reputation of Logan if the project failed.
“It is going to have a huge impact on our region if the resort is constructed and fails,” he said.
“We’ve already got developments at Flagstone and Yarrabilba to put our focus on, we don’t need to worry about another development too.”
Mr Power questioned the size, scale and density of the 1500-unit resort proposal, and said he was concerned about flooding in the area.
“And, what happens if the project will be off-loaded before being finished,” he said.
“We will be the laughing stock of the country.”
Division 5 councillor Jon Raven and division 1 councillor Lisa Bradley, who second Mr Power’s concerns, highlighted the development could have an impact on localised traffic.
“There is not yet any public transport or infrastructure in the area to support it,” Mr Raven said.
However, the majority of councillors – including division 11 councillor Trevina Schwarz and Planning and Development chairman Russell Lutton – voted in favour of the Lakes resort development.
“This will be a wonderful asset to the City of Logan,” Ms Schwarz
“It is a great development and it will bring more people to our area.”
