Canterbury College student William Glass has returned to school with a greater understanding of science after his trip to Canberra for the National Youth Science Forum.
William was chosen as a representative for the South Brisbane area last year, after being endorsed by Beenleigh Rotary.
The 12 day trip allowed students – focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics areas – to engage with researchers, and like-minded individuals from across the country.
William said he gained a lot of friends and contacts from the forum.
“It was great really engaging and inspiring,” he said.
“The people were lots of fun and I was able to engage with science researchers in many fields of science.
“The other students were all interested in science, but the areas of science were so broad.
“Every conversation I had I was learning something new.”
William said most students wanted to pursue tertiary education.
“Everyone wanted to do something to change the world with their skills,” he said.
“They were passionate about taking the skills they’ve learnt and applying them to their school.”
William said the research labs and Australian National University accommodation was great.
“We had several lab visits where we toured ANU campuses, and visited industries around Canberra, like Geoscience Australia, the Canberra Water Treatment Plant and a pathology lab,” he said.
They attended lectures about scientific research, gained career and study options information, and visited the Royal Australian Mint, Australian National Museum and National Portrait Gallery.
William said other year 11 students should apply for the 2018 program as it gave so many learning opportunities.
