The transfer of the site – announced on February 7 – was the result of government representatives recognising, and hearing, the concerns of the Logan community against turning the area into a greyhound racing track.
Racing Minister Grace Grace said the Palaszczuk Government had consulted with key industry stakeholders before deciding not to proceed with the proposed Cronulla Park greyhound track.
Treasurer and Minister for Sport, Curtis Pitt, said the government was proposing to provide up to $6.6 million to help establish a new PCYC, along with contribution from Logan City Council.
“Cronulla Park is a wonderful site, and sport and recreation will be a beneficial use for this valuable community asset,” he said.
“We listened to community concerns about the development of a greyhound racing facility on the site, and we believe a multi-use sporting facility is a much better outcome for Logan and the greater Logan City Council region.”
Logan City Council mayor Luke Smith was thrilled to have the site back in the hands of council.
“We are really excited to see the management of Cronulla Park return to our community,” he said.
“Council will soon commence a consultation period with the community to gauge interest on how to best utilise the site.
“The government is proposing to provide up to $6.6 million to help establish the new PCYC and we are excited that Logan City Council will now be able to consider their position on this commitment.”
