More than 60 athletes from Jimboomba competed at a variety of meets in Springwood, Ipswich, Nathan and New Zealand over the weekend winning buckets of medals and achieving state and national qualifying standards.
A team of 15 junior athletes attended the Ipswich annual carnival on Saturday where they braved a mid afternoon storm. One of the most successful athletes on the day was Zygmin Irving who won three gold medals in the under 10 boys age group. Team mates Eythyn Brown, Jonas and Jacob Hannam, Nathan and Joshua Britton and Taj and Tyler Mearns also finished highly in their events.
In the girls age group Abby Howden was a podium finisher with Lorrilee Clifford, Georgia Grimsey, Lorreta Temple and Alexia Hannam also competing well.
A 35-strong team travelled to Springwood on Sunday where they competed against athletes from over 30 other clubs and won more than 50 medals.
Mathew Stockham won five gold medals and broke a local discus record by more than 10 metres. Other athletes who won medals included Sam Emblen, Ryan Hanser, Camryn Newton-Smith, Nikita Collins, Tyron Mackinnon, Justin Sarah, Jesica Draper, Tiarna Isua, Connor Addley, Jack Addley, Charlie Schultz and Erin Gallagher.
Jimboomba’s three representatives in New Zealand, Marni Balmforth, Jamie Roser and Lachlan Tate competed strongly against their South Island competitors with Queensland team members dominating the opposition.
Athletes including Ben Roberts, Felila Kia, Riyani Kettle, Connor and Jack Addley, Sam Windsor, Kelsie Willoughby, Jesica Draper and Matthew and Taylah Lenz placed highly at the Sally Pearson Shield meet at Nathan on Saturday evening to ensure that Jimboomba Athletics remains near the top of the Queensland Athletics Club Championship leader board.
