Teaching skating skills to their young family has driven Yarrabilba’s Jacq and Daniel Cronin to push for a skate park in town.
The Cronins have put together a petition in order for the Yarrabilba community to show their support for the idea.
Mrs Cronin said she had contacted Lendlease to put forward her idea and was told there needed to be community backing for the project.
“I thought a petition would be the easiest way to show the support,” she said.
“The community have really impressed me so far.”
Mrs Cronin said her young family – particularly 11-year-old step-son Sebastian – would love a place to ride and skate.
“There just isn’t things for those 10 to 18-year-old to do here at the current parks,” she said.
“So we see them being unsafe and riding on the roads.”
Mrs Cronin acknowledged that there were negative connotations of skate parks but believed the community of Yarrabilba would “steer the area into a different direction”.
Lendlease’s General Manager of Communities for Queensland Guy Gibson said they welcomed feedback from the community as part of ongoing engagement.
“Lendlease’s vision at Yarrabilba is to provide recreational facilities, including parks, for the enjoyment of everyone in our diverse community, and as part of our planning for future development of the project, we’ll be considering feedback about the possible future inclusion of a skate park along with other options for youth facilities,” he said.
“As per our agreement with relevant authorities, we plan for parks and other community facilities in collaboration with Economic Development Queensland and Logan City Council.”
Logan City Council division four councillor Laurie Koranski said she was keen to see what infrastructure the community wanted for teens in Yarrabilba.
“I am here to serve the community of Yarrabilba and would be happy to explore options with residents,” she said.
Mrs Cronin said if the skate park came to fruition she would like it to be easily accessible for all Yarrabilba residents.
“I think a competition would be good to see what people wanted the park to look like,” she said.
