Calvary Christian College students, involved with the Livestock Show Team, have had a successful year this year – taking home more than 190 ribbons from a “wide variety of shows” the team exhibited at from around southeast Queensland.
Students were awarded for the quality of their Suffolk Stud, which included nine Reserve Champions, seven Champions and nine Supreme Champions.
Individual team members were also awarded 86 ribbons, including 28 placings, five Best Handler awards and two State Qualifiers.
The Livestock Show Team annually travels and partakes in events across the state – exhibiting at shows in areas such as Pittsworth, Warwick, Rocklea, Gatton and Marburg – while also showcasing their knowledge on the value of agriculture and farming to more than 1500 primary school students.
The Calvary Christian College group, which consists of students from Years 7 to 12, aims to broaden the public’s awareness and understanding of the vital agricultural services farmers provide.
“The Show Team’s efforts embody one of our College’s values, ‘Explore Your World’,” Agricultural Science Coordinator Kirsty Hart said.
“Our students travel across the state, experiencing the unique nature of rural communities; using the opportunity to educate and share their knowledge with other students from city schools.”
The Calvary Christian College’s Livestock Show Team completed against schools including Cleveland, Corinda, Dakabin, Rochdale, St George and Loganlea State High Schools, as well as Livingston College, Scotts PSG and Woodenbong Central School.
Ribbon winners included Year 11 student Matthew Sharp, who qualified for the State Championships in Young Judges by winning the competition at Marburg; Year 12 student Joshua Stubbings, qualifying for the same position after winning the competition at the EKKA; Year 12 student Claire Nock who won Best Handler at Warwick and the Toowoomba Royal; and Year 11 student Chelsea Bruce, winning the Champion Alpaca Handler title at the EKKA.
Sheep awarded ribbons included Supreme Champion School Ewe and All Breeds School Shield at Warwick; Supreme Sheep of Show and Most Successful Exhibitor at Rocklea; Interbreed Supreme Champion Ewe, Breeders Group and Sires Progeny Group at Gatton, and many more.
The Livestock Show Team also raised over $5000 throughout the year, with a significant portion going towards Australian farmers through the Drought Angels organisation.
