A Park Ridge resident has decided to stand as an advocate for the electorate of Forde – challenging the position of current Federal MP Bert van Manen in the next election – after her queries regarding further funding for the rural health sector were left unanswered.
Justine Christerson said she was “fed up” with the lack of response from local state and federal offices, and believed she could do a better job if given the chance.
“We need someone in the seat of Forde who is actually going to listen,” she said.
“I don’t think there are many members who truly represent their people. The government says one thing and does another, and it’s a really big issue.”
The Rural Patient Supporter, who specialises in assisting Queenslanders forced to relocate to Brisbane to access medical services, said further funding to expand services in the rural health and domestic violence sectors were high priorities on her list.
Ms Christerson also said she would like to see more “support networks” for newly migrated residents that welcome and help families integrate into society throughout the region.
“I want to focus on important local issues, as well as my passion for rural health, and that’s why I wanted to run for a federal seat,” the mother-of-three said.
“I want to make a difference to the sector nationwide, because I think there are a lot of families that could truly benefit from having specialists closer to home.
“We need more specialists in rural and regional areas.
“Families shouldn’t have to travel to Brisbane to access medical services.”
Ms Christerson, who will run for the federal seat of Forde as a member of the Glenn Lazarus Team, believed announcing her plan early would give residents plenty of time to reach out to discuss their views and concerns.
“I want to get my face out there to let people know I am here and this is what I’ll be doing,” she said.
“I wanted residents to have time to meet me and get to know me as a person; instead of just popping up six months ahead of the election.
“I want to know what’s their biggest concerns and understand how I can best represent our residents.”
A representative of Federal MP Bert van Manen’s office responded to the announced plan of Justine Christerson, stating “Mr van Manen makes every effort to meet with constituents and listen to their concerns”.
“Ms Christerson did email Bert van Manen’s office to express concerns about the opening of Lady Cilento hospital,” the representative said.
“She also spoke at length with Mr van Manen’s Chief of Staff.
“Mr van Manen (and) his team work very hard behind the scenes to follow up any questions and enquiries, as well as assist in any matters they can.”
