Jimboomba’s Lisa and Steven Welch are hosting an exclusive poker night to help raise funds to assist their son Jorge.
The 11-year-old dubbed ‘Jimboomba Jorge’ has a range of complex disabilities and severe epilepsy, regularly having more than 40 seizures a day.
One seizure trigger comes when changing Jorge, which is why the Welch family are hoping to raise more than $7000 to purchase, import and install an upright change table.
By purchasing this change table, not only will parents Lisa and Steven be safer, so too will Jorge; as he will not fall to the ground if having a seizure during the simple task that most take for granted.
The fundraising poker night will be held on November 12 at Jimboomba Hall with only 100 seats available.
One ticket will cost punters $100, but it includes , refreshments, food and $50 worth of poker chips.
The night include raffles, lucky door prizes and an auction, with thousands of dollars worth of goods up for grabs.
Mrs Welch said people did not realise the significant impact a change table would have on their lives.
“By buying this change table we can minimise another amount of injuries Jorge receives from his seizures,” she said.
“This is a priority for us, but to import, install and reinforce walls we are looking at more than $7000.
“After this poker evening we should have enough to purchase the table.”
Mrs Welch said they had received a large number of donations for the evenings prize’s and encouraged residents and friends to come along for a fun night.
“We wanted a different way to fund raise and we thought ‘why not give people the option to have a night out?’
“I mean, really, where can you go out on the town for just $100?”
The Welch family have made the “big picture” decision to sell their home and build a special needs friendly home to “assist in caring for Jorge for as long as our lives allow”.
Due to the custom design, they must build from scratch, leaving their property value differing to the bank assessment.
Overall, through multiple fundraisers and donations, they are hoping to raise between $80,000 to $100,000 to make up the deficit in the loan and assist their bui ed for Jorge.
Mrs Welch said several companies were on board to help them build at a discounted rate but many large corporations had been unable to help.
