Peter Moody lost count the number of times he confronted TV broadcasters and journalists after big race wins, conducting an instantaneous debrief of his horse's performance and outlining future plans for his winners.
That, of course, was back in the days when he was the state's - and one of Australia's - leading trainers, a career that ended abruptly earlier this year at Moonee Valley when he signed off at group 1 level by saddling up Flamberge to win the William Reid Stakes.
But the big Queenslander, whose name will forever be synonymous with that of champion galloper Black Caviar, cannot be kept out of the headlines for long, and he was back in the Valley spotlight on a wet Cox Plate Day - this time as an owner.
Nurse Kitchen, a lightly raced filly who runs in the colours of his wife, Sarah, had just shown marked improvement at only her second run from a spell to win the group 2 PW Glass Fillies Classic (1600 metres) in which she was pitched against the likes of I Am A Star, who two weeks earlier had run second in the Thousand Guineas, and the group 1-placed Sydney raider Sezanne.
On the ratings, the daughter of Savabeel had plenty to find - she came in off a mark of 63, while Sezanne ($2.45) and I Am A Star ($3.50) were running off marks of 77 and 94 respectively.
But for three-year-old fillies at this time of year official ratings can only be used as a guide as they do not include any margin for improvement.
And improvement is what Nurse Kitchen is all about. Although she went off at $19, her jockey, Kerrin McEvoy, made a sustained run from the back of the field to get her in front where it mattered, seeing off Sezanne and I Am A Star by half a length and a neck.
Trainer David Brideoake, the man entrusted by Moody to supervise his filly's development, said Nurse Kitchen would go for a spell and be given every chance to furnish and mature into the quality stayer he and the Moodys hope she will become.
A long-term target for her could be the Oaks in Sydney in the autumn, Brideoake said.
"She's very good, she's shown us enormous promise from the word go. It's a big effort at her third start to do this," he said.
"She was unlucky last start [when beaten six lengths in a benchmark race at Caulfield on October 1] but that's how it goes, today we were lucky."
Asked whether Moody offered advice on how to train the filly, Brideoake smiled diplomatically.
"It's interesting. He's on the other side of the fence now. There is the odd phone call. "
Moody, representing his wife, said that it was especially pleasing to win with a filly that he and Sarah had bred.
"She's out of one of our own mares [the dam, Flying Monty, is by Coolmore stallion Montjeu]. We've always had a good feel for her and David and his team have done a tremendous job. A group 2 at her third run, we think she's got a lot of promise ahead of her and we are very much looking forward to the autumn with her.
Asked what the plans are, Moody shot back: "You will have to speak to the trainer."
Brideoake outlined what the next few months might hold.
"You might not see her for a while, probably in the autumn. I think she's a good filly with a great staying pedigree and will be suited by races of a mile [1600 metres] and up. The Oaks in Sydney would probably be a rational target .
"She was a big immature horse, she took a while."
