When you're on a group 1 horse in a group 2 race you can do what Kerrin McEvoy did on The United States to win the Crystal Mile at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
He was the best horse and rode him like it, proving too strong by making a run from the 800m mark.
The United States was simply too good for his rivals around the Moone Valley mile. He is set to the challenge the best gallopers in the Emirates Stakes on the final day of the Flemington carnival and possibly Hong Kong.
"Kerrin [McEvoy] said it was like a bit of good work five home two [1000m, sprinting the last 400m]," owner Nick Williams said. "He is already a group 1 winner and we will give him his chance at it again in the next couple of runs.
"He is back from that little problem and he is fresh and ready to go to the next level.
"He is effective from a mile to a mile-and-a-half and he is just going to get better from that run.
"There is $2 million reasons to be at Flemington in a couple of weeks and then maybe Hong Kong. He has a lot of improvement from that run."
The United States had a setback, which took him out of cups and Cox Plate contention and Team Williams reassess the goals.
"It wasn't anything serious but it meant he missed work for about 10 days and you can't go into a meeting with the best horse in Australia on a prep like that," Williams said.
The United States might not have been out of place in the Cox Plate.
It was a supremely confident ride from McEvoy in a small field. He just lobbed out the barriers at the start and going back to last. He summed up the slow pace by the 1000m and at the 800m went from on the inside last to four wide stalking into the race.
"He overcome that little hic-cup and freshen up well," McEvoy said. "Lloyd [Williams] was quite bullish that the mile would be no problem.
"He said just give him some clear daylight and he'll do the rest and he did.
"[At the 800m] I want to get clear because it was being muddling run race. I was on a big brute of a horse and was lucky I could manoeuvre one out of the way.
"I hit the front early enough, so that run would just bring him on again."
The United States hooped the field hit the front turning for home and held a length advantage from leader Lidari with Ulmann getting home for third a neck away.
Lidari's jockey John Allen was pleased with brave effort as he looks to less lofty goals during later carnival than the winner.
"The winner just out sprinted at the 400m but he stuck to his task and on the line I was taking ground off him," Allen said.
He Or She, which was third in the three-horse Caulfield Stakes behind Winx and Black Heart Bart last start, was never comfortable on the going and David Hayes will freshen him up the Railway Stakes in Perth.
"He needs a firm track and just hated that," Hayes said. "We will take him to Perth where he will get that firm track which really sits."
