Logan Village State School and Hills International College will take part in this year’s Music: Count Us In program on November 3.
The program enables students from across the country to learn a song and perform it simultaneously around Australia.
It is both a participation and advocacy program – raising the profile of music education on the national stage, and providing hundreds of thousands of students with practical music learning.
Actor and singer Jay Laga’aia of Play School fame joins Music: Count Us In 2016 as program mentor.
Mr Laga’aia said he was looking forward to seeing the different interpretations of the song in each community.
“To get together on that special Celebration Day and for everyone to sing it – for me, that’s going to be very exciting,” he said.
Previous mentors for the program have included Katie Noonan, Josh Pyke and Marcia Hines, who have been led by Program Ambassador John Foreman OAM.
The 2016 Program Song Let It Play was written by students Stella Kelly, 16, from Western Australia, Tom Meadows, 11, from Victoria, Bonnie Staude, 14, from Western Australia, and Breanna Truscott, 14, from Queensland, along with the program ambassador and mentor.
The song features a variation on Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel.
All 745 Logan Village State School students will be singing, playing and dancing along to the music for their third year in the program.
“Our students love singing the song. We have introduced the recorder and the prep students will have actions,” said music teacher Maxine Ram.
For the first time Hills students from prep to year two will be involved with teacher Andrea Garwell.
Ms Garwell said the younger students at the school were excited to be involved in the program.
“We are really pushing an inclusive music program at Hills and this really celebrates the fact that these children are studying music at school when lots of children do not have that chance,” she said.
Queensland students will sing at 11.30am on the day.
