The Western Advocate is at Mount Panorama on Sunday to bring you all the updates for the 2016 Bathurst 1000. Check this page during the day for full updates on what’s happening on and off the track.
THE LION ROARS: Will Davison and Jonathon Webb win the 2016 Bathurst 1000!!!!!
Davison has become the first person to ever win the Bathurst 12 hour and the Bathurst 1000 in the same year.
Davison and Webb started the 161 laps from P17 on the grid.
TEN LAPS TO GO: A massive moment at The Chase as Whincup goes for a move on the inside of Scott McLaughlin for second place but the Red Bull driver goes into a slide.
He shunts McLaughlin off the track, and as the Volvo driver rejoined Garth Tander collided with the duo.
That collision took both Tander and McLaughlin into the wall while Whincup escaped unhindered.
Whincup stays out while Tander and McLaughlin come into the pits. Top 10 behind the safety car are: Whincup, Davison, VanGisbergen, Percat, Waters, Pye, Caruso, Coulthard, Slade and Pither.
Whincup in car #88 has received a 15 second time penalty for a driving infringement following that incident.
SAFETY CAR AS WINTERBOTTOM HITS THE DIRT: With 26 laps to go Mark Winterbottom has found the dirt at The Chase, adding a safety car to the mix and drivers jumping into pit lane.
Break failure destroyed Winterbottom’s chances of finishing the race.
“I was starting to get a long pedal so it (the brake rotor) must have been going.”
THOUSANDS ATTEND BATHURST 1000: The second biggest ever crowd number has been recorded at this year’s Bathurst 1000.
The four-day attendance of 204,512 is the highest since 2012 (50th anniversary) of 207,205. This year’s event has celebrated nine-time Bathurst winner Peter Brock, on the 10th anniversary of his death.
Supercars drivers took part in a special parade in some of Brock’s famous race cars before the start of today’s race. Natalie Bassingthwaite performed the national anthem before a Virgin Australia flyover of the famous circuit.
Fans around the circuit gave Brock, who car carried the number 05 during his career, a standing ovation on lap five of the race.
RAIN ON THE WAY?: A band of rain has hit Cowra and is making it’s way across to the Bathurst area. Will we see a wet track later in the race?
SAFETY CAR ON LAP 108: A sudden engine failure for Moffat with a blown engine, smoke could be seen bellowing from car #34 as it started up Mountain Straight.
Moffatt is out of the car walking back down the mountain as it is put onto a track to be taken back to the pits.
FIRST SAFETY CAR: Team BOC driver Andrew Jones who struck trouble on lap 92, making heavy contact with the right hand wall at Reid Park.
Fortunately he was able to walk away from the incident, but it is race over for the #8 Commodore he shared with Jason Bright.
“It was disappointing, but we were unlucky early on with the gear position sensor failing and we went a lap down with that one,” Bright said.
“But it was good to see Andy get out, that’s the main thing. It was a bit scary there when he didn’t get out. We’ll fight on.”
The safety car means plenty of action along Pit Straight as cars pull in for a pit stop.
It’s been a clean race so far this morning without a safety car before now. For those interested in a bit of trivia – Back in 1989 and 1991 there wasn’t a safety car at all during the race.
ONLY AT BATHURST: Hey Skippy!
CRAIG LOWNDES AND STEVEN RICHARDS: A problem with the gear leaver has seen the #888 Team Vortex car stuck in the pits earlier this morning.
While back on track now drivers Craig Lowndes and Steven Richards are sitting seven laps behind the race leaders.
JUST TWO LAPS FOR LEE HOLDSWORTH: Lee Holdsworth’s bid to claim the second Bathurst 1000 podium of his career only lasted two laps on Sunday.
With his #18 Preston Hire Racing Holden Commodore not sounding like it was firing on all cylinders, he pulled into the pits after his second lap of Mount Panorama.
Some 50 minutes later after discovering a broken engine rocker, the decision was made to call it race over. For Holdsworth, who placed third in the 2009 Bathurst 1000, it was devastating.
Earlier in the day Holdsworth posted this on his Facebook page:
FIRST PIT STOP: Sitting in the top 10 after the first round of pit stops are:
- Dumbrell
- Wall
- Premat
- Owen
- Youlden
- Walsh
- Fiore
- Perkins
- Canto
- Webb
It’s been a very clean race so far, with drivers completing lap 28 of 161 without a safety car. It’s the first time in memory a safety car hasn’t been deployed before the first round of pit stops.
THE FIRST FIVE LAPS: A last minute decision from Red Bull Racing #88 team saw Jamie Whincup in the drivers seat for the start of the race.
Whincup got the jump on Scott McLaghlin and Chaz Mostert off the start line, leading the pack around the Mountain for the first five laps of the race.
The fastest lap of the race so far was set by McLaughlin on lap four with a 2:07.5839.
On Lap five McLaughlin sits 0.8597 behind Whincup in the lead.
Lee Holdsworth pitted on lap three for an unscheduled stop, pulling into the garage. Earlier in the weekend the team had performed an unscheduled engine change after struggling for speed during practice.
