University of Southern Queensland (USQ) student Josh Hill from the Logan suburb of Windaroo brought home more than photos from his study abroad experience in the United States (US).
Hill, spent two semesters at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he earned two national titles with the University’s rugby team.
Now back at USQ Springfield for the final year of his Bachelor of Education degree, Mr Hill said sharing in the team’s success was the highlight of his trip.
“It was a real thrill winning the first national championship for 15-a-side rugby, but claiming the College 7s national championship was by far the most amazing experience,” he said.
“We played at a huge stadium with commentators, live broadcasting and a big replay screen. I felt like I was playing in the NRL.”
Mr Hill works as a teacher aide in special education and is passionate about improving the quality of learning for children with diverse needs.
“My experience in the US was incredible, but the best thing I got out of it, besides making new friends, was being able to gain a great insight into what the special education system is like over there,” Mr Hill said.
“I strongly believe there is a lot that can be done in Australia to improve our system in terms of resources and strategies that educators can use and I want to help change that.
“My goal is to one day incorporate a health and physical exercise program into special education settings in secondary schools.”
Mr Hill said he would recommend studying abroad to any USQ students looking for a fun, fulfilling and life-changing adventure.
“Studying overseas is something not many people get the chance to do so you have to make the most of the opportunity,” he said.
“You get to meet new people, experience different things and get involved in campus activities.”
