Jimboomba’s Relay for Life committee have made a big, bubbly change to the end of this year’s relay.
Instead of letting off the balloons, the Relay committee have decided to go green, blowing bubbles to farewell those who have been lost.
Committee member Lee Tait said they thought it would be best to remove the balloon component in order to look after the environment and hoped that other relays would get on board.
“We just felt that the non-renewable helium would be better used for medical purposes,” she said.
“In the past we have changed to biodegradable string and balloons, but we can’t guarantee where they will land.
“We just weren’t being responsible.”
Ms Tait said the new bubble idea would be incorporated into the new ending of the relay which they hope will be just as moving.
“We thought the bubbles were a similar idea of ‘floating off,” she said.
“We we don’t believe we will receive complaints about the new process.
“It’s still a celebration and a release of emotions.
“We are rewriting the ending to incorporate a new focus plus having an earth friendly relay.”
The committee hope to be leaders in the enviro-friendly Relay for Life movement.
