Cancer Council Queensland is inviting people who have been affected by cancer to take part in a half day Mindfulness Workshop in Jimboomba.
The workshop will be held on September 9 from 10am until 2pm at Dorrington House.
It is based on a combination of mindfulness meditation and cognitive therapy and is run by Cancer Council Queensland’s Cancer Counselling Service.
Research shows up to one third of cancer patients experience ongoing psychological challenges such as anxiety and depression, as a result of their illness.
Emotional stress after cancer can be just as challenging during diagnosis or treatment.
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said the workshop is designed for cancer patients, their partners, family and caregivers and is suitable for any age group.
“At the workshop, participants will explore how mindfulness meditation, with practice, can help them become more aware of patterns of thinking and reacting, and learn ways to let go of worries about the future or the past,” she said.
”Being aware of automatic patterns of thought can give people the choice to let go and be more present in the moments of their day, even when life is challenging.
“This assists those affected by cancer in coping emotionally and leading a healthier, happier life.
“The workshop also offers a supportive environment to meet with, and talk to, others going through a similar experience.
“Participants can contribute as much, or as little, as they are comfortable with.”
