IN her signature high heels and feminine dresses, Councillor Laurie Koranski has stopped, dropped and live-streamed 22 push-ups on Facebook every day since August 8.
Cr Koranski has been participating in the social media campaign known as the 22 Push-Up Challenge which raises awareness of veteran suicide.
The 22 Push-Up Challenge was set up by US foundation 22Kill with the primary goal of honouring and raising awareness of the prevalence of suicide among returning soldiers.
Participants do 22 push-ups a day for 22 days.
The foundation's deputy director Don Nguyen said the campaign was motivated by statistics that on average 22 US veterans a day were committing suicide.
Cr Koranski was nominated to undertake the challenge by fellow councillor Jon Raven, who completed the challenge on August 17 with 41 final push-ups.
“I found out during the challenge that 41 Australian servicemen have committed suicide this year already, that is people in active service as well as veterans,” he said.
Cr Koranski said the challenge was a fun way to raise awareness for things such as PTSD, anxiety and depression facing returning servicemen and that drives veterans to commit suicide.
“These brave men and women put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms only to get back and feel lost,” she said.
Cr Koranski is encouraging everyone to take on the challenge and nominate someone else to do it to spread the word and raise awareness of the difficulties facing returning servicemen.
