I love this time of year.
The cool fresh mornings, warm days and the promise of spring in the air. It really is the time to get down and dirty. Is your garden ready for summer?
If not; it is not too late, put the trailer on the car or borrow a Ute and go and get some bags of manures.
Horse, sheep, cow or goat whatever you can get your hands on. Take it home and spread it on the garden, now water well and rest for about a month.
Now you’re ready for summer planting. (If you don’t believe it can be that early - come to the garden for our working bees and watch us do the same!)
This week in Jimboomba Community Garden we have been raking out our compost piles, adding manure, arrow root and comfrey leaves to make new garden beds, ready for some serious planting.
The shade house has also been the hive of activity as we pot up our seeds and seedlings.
We are getting a jump start on summer this year and we have prepared a variety of edible plants such as; watermelon, cucumber, lettuce, tomatoes, basil, pumpkins, gourds, parsley, corn, okra, beans and luffas.
We will also be planting eggplant, capsicum chillies, rockmelons, carrots radish, silverbeet and beetroot.
Don’t forget the flowers, and companions; we also plant salvias, coreopsis, hearts ease, cosmos, alyssum and petunias in amongst the vegetables to bring colour, beauty and pollinators to the garden.
Then the much loved marigolds, chives, society garlic and yarrow bring garden predators and deter pest attack.
For more information on companion planting and growing herbs, don’t forget to join us in the garden for our first commUNITY FRESH PRODUCE MARKET on Sunday 18th of September; our special guest speaker is none other than Noel Burdett; radio presenter and avid garden writer, who will be giving great tips and advice on the subject of companion planting.
So when you have all the good info and are motivated to go home and plant… Remember that at JCG - we also have seedlings for sale.
See you in the garden…
