Canterbury College students Mia and Sola Hughes have taken part in the Australian Chamber Orchestra Academy held in Brisbane.
The girls both played violin at the academy.
The academy is a professional development program that works with top-level secondary string players.
The week-long event was attended by 30 other students who were selected through a national audition process.
Through the week the girls took part in chamber orchestra rehearsals focusing on ensemble playing, technical accuracy, interpretation and style while working with ACO musicians and ACO emerging artists.
There were also presentations by ACO musicians and staff on careers and pathways in music
Year 10 student Mia said she was excited to be selected for a national event.
“I was really nervous to play,” she said.
“It was a lot of effort and hard work, but it was inspiring how well everyone worked together and had fun doing it.
“It would be great to be selected again.”
Year 11 student Sola said the academy was inspirational.
“I’ve never been to something like this before and it was so great to make friends through music,” she said.
“We learnt how to blend our sound with each other and play the orchestra repertoire.
“I learnt how to put detail into every note and I can now put that into my own work.”
The girls learn four pieces and one piece for their chamber group.
Sola also won the Quota Beenleigh Instrumental Trophy with $150 prize money.
“If you win once you can’t win again, but I’m pretty proud of being selected,” she said.
She will be putting the funds toward a new bow.
