In wet conditions on Saturday afternoon the Redbacks seniors turned on a stellar final quarter to defeat highly fancied premiership contender Sherwood Woodsmen by 54 points at Jimboomba.
The Redbacks made a great start kicking five goals to one in the first quarter but that margin was eroded in the second quarter to 11 points as the Woodsmen began wrestling back control of the game.
The Redbacks produced their season’s best performance in the final term, kicking seven goals to run away with a 54 point win. Best on ground were Bryce Tomlinson, Kristian Rooks, Matt Dillon and Rodney Shaw.
Under 15s
The under 15s girls took on Narangba on Sunday and even though they lost, they stayed positive and fought hard until the final siren.
A fantastic mark from Jazmin Golebiowski in the goal square put the first goal of the game on the score board. Keelie Coburn did not give up without a fight, tackling left, right and centre and kicking the second goal. Lana Van Heerden played an exceptional game playing in the ruck for the first time.
Even though the girls lost by 83 points they gave it their all and went out with a bang in the last quarter. Three Jimboomba players in Marni and Phoebe Balmforth and Chloe Ackland were unable to play due to being selected for the Queensland State team, as they had training all weekend in preparation for the national championships from July 23-30.
Under 13s
The Redbacks under 13s faced top of the ladder team Wilston Grange at home earning a draw 5.4.34 to 5.4.34.
Zac Bond kicked two early goals and when Flagstone Takeaway award winner Matt Gillham slotted a goal from a shot after the siren the Redbacks were up 3.1.19 to 1.1.7 at the first break. Wilston Grange then kicked two goals in the second quarter before John Byrne stepped up for a goal followed again by Gillham to have the score at the half-time break 5.2.32 to 3.3.21.
The third term was a struggle and Jimboomba held a slender 5.3.33 to 4.4.28 lead at the last change. Early in the last quarter Wilston Grange hit the front. To Jimboomba’s credit they defended well with McDonald’s award winner Nicolay Yashin-Torres repelling many attacks.
A rushed behind to the Redbacks tied up the scores with a couple of minutes to go, then in the final minute as Wilston Grange headed into attack an outnumbered Reyni Nathan made a match saving decision to leave his man and attack the ball, winning the contest, ensuring the draw.
Under 11s
A physical battle resulted in a low scoring game with close rivals Park Ridge. Each team finished with four goals.Highlights were strong tenacious effort from Ashleigh Hodges, hard ball gets by Tony Damouni, ferocious tackling by Luke Brisbane, and strong movement out of the backline by Corbin Kaminski, Owen Maguire, Billy O'Neil and Keoni Dawes.
Under 9s
The under 9s faced a tough challenge on Saturday against Springwood Gold at home. There was some great moments of play in the game with Zara Brimble, Dennis Gaynor and Aston Lyons getting their hands on the ball at every opportunity.
Jarret Wilson and Corey Young where among some of the team kicking great goals on the day while Mateo Chizzoniti is showing more confidence every game.
The under 9s are showing great skill in attacking and in defence and are always excited to play the game.
Under 8s
The Under 8s continued to improve, securing another huge win at home. Joseph Vidoni kicked 5 goals, Flynn Starkey was very prominent and Cayden Hume improved to play his best game of the year. The continued development of many of the less experienced players is really pleasing
