The inaugural Indonesian language speech competition was held at Browns Plains State High School on July 13.
Thirty-two students from Browns Plains, Park Ridge and Ferny Grove state high schools battled it out in the year seven and eight competition.
Browns Plains year eight student Rabiah Pathan and Park Ridge year seven student Sophie Talbot were named winners of their respective year levels.
Year seven students were required to speak about their families, while year eight prepared their one minute speeches about their hobbies.
The competitors were very excited, albeit nervous to take the stage.
Judges Ibu Nana Sheridan, Doctor Annie Pohlman and Martin Simons were very impressed with all the speakers.
“Languages help with the whole of literacy and it helps them learn their first language better,” Ibu Nana Sheridan said.
Speakers Jana Teruel and Tahyla Maher said they had been practicing a lot before the competition began.
The speech competition was enabled by the languages innovation grant to promote Indonesian language in schools.
Browns Plains put on an Indonesian lunch for competitors and teachers.
Languages are a key learning area for students and are often offered in clusters in order to benefit from junior feeder schools.
