A TRAVELLER who spent time in Logan and Beaudesert in recent days has been diagnosed with measles.
Metro South Health public health physician Dr Bhakti Vasant said the person was infectious while in the area from Saturday, June 25 to Tuesday this week, June 28.
“Public health staff have already been contacting people known to have been in close contact with the case, but given the number of people potentially exposed, further measles cases could present in Brisbane or elsewhere over the next few weeks,” Dr Vasant said.
The infectious individual arrived in Brisbane on Jetstar flight JQ 574 from Melbourne early afternoon on Saturday, June 25 and then caught a train to Beenleigh Station.
On Monday, June 27, the traveller spent time at the Beaudesert Fair Shopping Centre, before returning to Melbourne on Jetstar flight JQ 569 at 12:45pm.
Dr Vasant said anyone adequately vaccinated was very unlikely to get the disease but encouraged those uncertain of their immunity to speak with their GP.
“Measles is one of the most infectious of all communicable diseases and can cause fever, cough, runny nose, then a red spotty rash and sore eyes a few days later,” she said.
“This can be a very serious disease, so anyone developing measles-like symptoms within the next three weeks is encouraged to contact their GP for advice.”
