A sports and community hub building will soon embellish Yarrabilba’s Shaw Street Oval.
The addition has been made possible due to a project funding arrangement between Logan City Council, Lend Lease and the Queensland Government.
Chair of the Sport and Community Services Committee, Councillor Steve Swenson said construction of the multi-purpose building, which will include change rooms, toilets, storage areas, a canteen, multipurpose area and offices, had been fast-tracked with the announcement of a state government grant.
Council and Lend Lease had agreed to fund a share of the building costs, but their combined $1 million was inadequate for the full funding of the envisaged facility.
“We decided to apply for a Queensland Government Get Playing Plus Grant, as one of three submissions made by council,” Cr Swenson said.
“We were fortunate that all three applications submitted by council were successful – Stage 1 of the Beenleigh Pool redevelopment, the improvements to the Waller Road BMX facility at Browns plains and this development all received funding in this round.”
The three state government funding grants added a total of $2.3 million towards council funded projects valued at $6.954 million.
Division 4 Councillor, Laurie Koranski said Yarrabilba was a young and rapidly growing community that urgently needed good quality sporting and community facilities.
“Both council and the developer recognised that community infrastructure was needed sooner rather than later as this is one of the fastest growing areas in south east Queensland,” she said.
“With a high proportion of families with school-aged children moving into the Yarrabilba and the growing popularity of the Shaw Street Sports Oval as a venue, this will rapidly become a very well used facility by the entire community.”
Lendlease’s general manager for communities in Queensland, Guy Gibson said the company understood the need to deliver hgih quality community spaces focusing on lifestyle and community benefits.
“A new multi-purpose sport and community hub is great news for Yarrabilba and the surrounding community,” he said.
