The world’s top golfer and former Hills International College student Jason day will not be swinging the clubs for Australia at the Rio Olympics in August.
The world number 1 ranked golfer joins numerous other top golfers in pulling out of the Rio games due to fears over the Zika virus.
The US PGA championship winner released a statement on social media stating that due to concerns over the transmission of the mosquito born Zika virus, and the risks it poses to any future pregnancies by his wife, Ellie, and future members of his family, that he was regretfully withdrawing from the games.
Joining Day in declining the chance to compete for a gold medal in golf at the Olympics for the first time in 128 years are fellow Australian Marc Leishman, Rory McIlroy, Branden Grace, Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen and Vijay Singh as others choosing not to attend Rio citing the virus while Adam Scott, and Graeme McDowell have declined for other reasons.
Day however has recently confirmed he will represent Australia at the World Cup event at Kingston Heath Melbourne in November.
Day is also expected to make his first appearance at the Australian Open since 2013 in the week prior to the Melbourne event.
