The countdown to the Rotary Tour De Logan is on again, but this year the event boasts a truly inspirational entrant, and she hails from Logan Village.
While she cannot balance a conventional bike, Del Hastings was determined to join her husband Gary and fellow members of the Village Rockers Inc in taking on the 40km ride with her trike.
The Village Rockers are a local Rock and Roll dance club that also engages in cycling, kayaking and camping, and Ms Hastings is an active committee member.
But it was not only Ms Hastings’ determination to support her fellow club members that inspired the Logan Village local to participate in the event, the Tour De Logan is raising money for Diabetes Queensland.
Ms Hastings has lived with the disease for the last 46 years and despite the physical challenges presented by it, has not let it slow her down.
Members of the Village Rockers decided to enter the cycling event to salute the inspirational example Ms Hastings sets for diabetes sufferers.
This year the Tour De Logan cycle event takes place on July 31.
It has been organised by the Rotary Clubs of Beenleigh and Loganholme for the past six years.
Event volunteer Kim Hackwood said Tour De Logan was an important sporting event on the Logan City calendar and was acknowledged by Queensland cyclists as a great preparation for other major riding and endurance events.
“The ride is not a race, instead it is a one entry fee fundraising ride,” she said.
“Our main objectives of the ride is to raise funds to support the work of Diabetes Queensland and also to target youth and community programs within Logan City.
“To date, the event has raised over $55,000 towards these objectives.”
The event offers 100km, 40km and 20km distances throughout Logan City starting and finishing at Berrinba Wetlands Parklands in Browns Plains.
