NEW Beith’s Molly McGill has placed second at the World BMX Championships.
After reclaiming the Australian BMX title in March, Molly returned from the World BMX Championships in Columbia with a silver medal in the under-15 girls category.
The 15-year-old St Thomas Moore school student said she was ecstatic with her result.
“Once I crossed the line, I sat down and smiled,” she said.
“I was so proud of what I had just achieved.
“Being number two in the world and knowing that I had worked so hard for this result was just amazing.”
Molly finished behind American rider Jordan Scott in the final race. Her world titles campaign started with 30 hours of travel from her New Beith home address to the Brisbane international airport, before touching down at the 2016 BMX World Championships in Columbia.
Molly was awarded a scholarship to get to the world championships by Australian BMX champion Caroline Buchanan, her idol and Olympic role model.
With her sights set on one day following in Buchanan’s treadprints to the Olympics, Molly said she wanted nothing more than to make a career from BMX riding.
Molly’s father David McGill said he was tremendously proud of his daughter. “She started riding when she was six-years-old and has worked so hard to reach her goals every single day,” he said.
Coach Luke Marsh, who has been working with Molly for the past 14 months, said her dedication made her the easiest athlete to train.
“Her hard work and persistence has been the key to her success and I am so proud to coach her and continue to help her reach her goals,” he said.
Molly said she couldn't have done it without her great support crew.
