The Jimboomba branch of the Queensland Cancer Council is hoping to beat its fund raising total of $1100 with this year’s Biggest Morning tea.
The event will be staged at Cafe on Cusack at 9.30am on Thursday, May 26. The entry cost of $35 includes a three-course morning tea, fashion parade by Licorice clothing store and a guest speaker. Speaking will be Scott Knowl of the Cancer Council.
Jimboomba chairperson Sabine Sydenham said she believed raising funds to find cures for cancer was very important.
“What can I say? I can’t county how many people I have lost to this. I have lost friends and recently family. It matters that we raise funds for research. Something like this morning tea can make a difference,” Ms Sydenham said.
Ms Sydenham said even small things were important, even if only purchasing a cancer patient a turban or helping them through chemotherapy. Another help for country folk is to pay for lodging in the city during treatment times.
“I took a neighbour to chemo three days a week. It’s a long way from the country into the city and it’s a nice thing to have company. I like to think this sort of thing makes a difference and is some comfort for someone going through this,” she said.
The local group participates in Relay for Life, Pink Ribbon Day and Daffodil Day.
“It gives you a sense of achievement to belong and to know that you are helping. I get a lot of pleasure in doing this and I have made some wonderful friends.”
