Motorists are petitioning the state government to stop traffic crossing over the Mount Lindesay Highway to enter the Logan Motorway.
Drivers heading north on the Mt Lindesay Highway often stop illegally to ease congestion caused by cars waiting to cross the highway to travel west on the motorway.
The Change.org petition, which was started by Forestdale couple Stan and Suz Corbett, is calling for the state government to close off the right-hand turn immediately and direct traffic onto the Johnson Road loop.
The petition states this will be a “safer option in the short-term”.
The petition also objects to changes to the Beaudesert Road/Mt Lindesay Highway interchange that are proposed by Transurban Queensland under the Logan Enhancement Project.
The changes include traffic lights at the right-hand turn, which would replace a stop sign at the right-hand turn for southbound traffic.
The petition calls for consideration of an overpass instead of traffic lights.
“The traffic situation will become worse over time with the new developments taking place at Flagstone, Yarrabilba and other southern residential developments,” the petition states.
In a Transurban document on the proposed upgrades Transurban states the changes would improve safety, reliability and increase traffic flow.
“An overpass at the Mt Lindesay Highway/Beaudesert Road interchange is not considered a viable solution given the very high number of conflicting traffic movements and the close proximity of other interchanges,” the information states.
The document states 76,000 vehicles travel on the Mt Lindesay Highway north of Browns Plains Road every day.
“Only 56 per cent of this traffic is travelling through to Beaudesert Road,” the document states.
At the time of going to press, 712 people had signed the petition, which is addressed to Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey and Treasurer Curtis Pitt.
Narelle Clucas, of Munruben, commented on the petition that she signed, saying it was dangerous for motorists to stop and let traffic cross and when vehicles travelling south ignored the stop sign.
“Please put a left turn under the motorway to stop this dangerous act from both directions,” she wrote.
Wendy Hansen, of North Maclean, commented on the petition that congestion and potential accidents were caused by people on the highway giving way to cars crossing the road during peak hour.
“Taking away that turning lane onto the motorway will create a free flowing highway. Putting in traffic lights would make a bad situation far worse,” she stated.
Logan MP Linus Power said there was a consultative process underway for Transurban Queensland’s Logan Enhancement Project.
He encouraged people to give their feedback to Transurban Queensland regarding the proposals.
