Weddings are always a very happy event.
Many researchers say that it is the information which is documented for a marriage that is the most reliable, because there is such excitement for a birth, and much sorrow for a death that there can often be little mistakes made filling in the forms. We at the museum have been researching weddings within the families of our district. To date we have 130 plus now.
There is much information which may be gleaned from a wedding photo. In many cases before 1900 the bride always was standing whereas the groom was sitting. There are a few where the bride is sitting but that seems to not be the norm. The style of dress and bouquets is interesting as the brides of 1930-40s were dressed similar to those of the 1870-80s, especially with the large bouquets.
It is interesting how fashion changed. In the 1950-60s the gowns were less frilly and the bouquets smaller.Throughout the ages the men have always worn a suit. It is a wedding which draws the community together, and this can be seen with the multiple photos where the bride and groom are from our pioneer families.
Or there are brides or grooms who have come from outside of the area, but have remained after their marriage. This has helped strengthen the bond of our community to this day and should be cherished by all.
