MORE than 120 Emmaus College year 9 students are helping spread ‘diffability’ awareness as part of a recent social justice awareness project.
The students recently gathered to form an ‘I’ on the school oval as part of the DanDaLion Friends’ Diffability Challenge, in conjunction with other schools.
The act is designed to promote inclusivity and diffability – the recognition of people who’s abilities are different to others.
Teacher Chloe Jensen said the students were inspired to promote the values of the DanDaLion Friends organisation after its representatives spoke to students about unlocking their “make a difference gene”.
“They help kids with a disability fit in because it is not about being different, it is about having a diffability,” she said.
She said the students were given two weeks to organise the project and challenged to to “make a dent” in their world.
Year 9 student Megan Gillespie, 13, said she wanted to help the organisation spread the message of diffability and inclusivity.
“They aren’t disabilities… they have a diffability and they can bring more to the community,” she said.
She said the students who participated in the event enjoyed being a part of it.
Year 9 student Kazmira Euler, 14, said she was touched by DanDaLion Friends’ message and wanted to be a part of spreading it.
“We saw a cause and we really connected with how DanDaLion are helping people and we thought it would be really nice to help them,” she said.
