A CEDAR Grove couple is hoping locals will combine fitness with the gift of giving this Christmas as part of a campaign to help the homeless.
Jae and Bec Martin will kick off their 12 Days of Fitness for Charity on December 12 to raise funds to fill backpacks with everyday supplies to give to people spending Christmas Day in Brisbane homeless shelters.
As part of the campaign, former personal trainer Jae will post a short exercise routine on Facebook on each of the 12 days for those taking part to follow along with.
Each day a new exercise will be added to the list, with beginner to advanced options available covering all fitness levels.
While there is no obligation, Jae hopes those following the routine will dig deep and make a donation to help the couple help the homeless.
He said the campaign was a great way for people to get fit while helping out people in need.
Mr Martin is hoping to raise enough money to make more than 200 backpacks to hand out.
Each bag will be filled with festive food, water, toiletries, torch, as well as a handwritten note.
“We are hoping to raise about $5000 to fund the 200 plus backpacks,” he said.
“We are looking for businesses and individuals who want to assist as well who want to donate or give their time.”
He said donations from people not wanting to exercise but keen to help were also welcome.
“A lot of people want to give back, but don’t know how to give back,” Mr Martin said.
“People can donate money or give their time because we have got people who can’t afford to donate, but will help pack the bags.
“Or they come on Christmas morning and help deliver them if they like. Basically we are open to anything.”
Mr Martin started the charity campaign to help the homeless last year after he and his wife suffered financial difficulties.
“We were not in a very good financial position the year before, which happened really quickly and we realised how easily it could happen to anyone,” he said.
“Homelessness was something that I would hate to think anyone had to go through.
