IT was a big weekend of track and field for members of the Jimboomba Little Athletics Centre and Jimboomba Athletics Club who won medals at the Browns Plains Annual Carnival.
Club members also scored points at the Queensland Athletics Jai Taurima Shield.
The event is named after Australia’s Olympic silver medallist long jumper ‘Jumping Jai’ Taurima.
The shield meet was the first QA club championship round of the season.
The event was held in the main stadium of the Queensland Athletics Centre on Saturday evening.
It was attended by 20 local athletes.
National qualifying performances were posted by Mitchell Fekete Nathan Wilkins, Nick Wilkins, Zac McDonald, Riley Higgins and Maddison Aitkin, along with Talosaga Kia, Lauren Woodward, Alarni Kia and Camryn Newton-Smith.
Athletes also contributing to the points tally were Matthew Lenz, Nikita Collins, Melissa Schmidt, Angela Roberts, Samantha Schmidt Jesica Draper and Taylah Lenz.
Nathan Wilkins also received congratulations for posting a World Junior qualifying throw in the hammer.
Jimboomba’s team at the Browns Plain Carnival on Sunday included many athletes who were attending their first external meet.
Medals were won by Jimboomba athletes Lorrilee Clifford, Josii Hargreaves, Ebonique Bess, Erin Gallagher, Lachlan Tate, Jack Schultz, Izac Addley, Imogen Gee, Sam Pearce, Jayden Rushton, Lilly Pearce and Nathanial Lovaszi.
Corey Muller, Kodi Pearson, Jessica Hewson, Angela Roberts, Camryn Newton-Smith, Rayma Tuputala, Sam Emblen, Kyle Howlett and Courteney Bromage also won medals.
Club records were broken by six athletes during the club’s Friday evening competition.
Among them was Erin Gallagher, who broke the under 10s discus record with a throw of 27.44m.
Alarni-Felila Kia broke the under 12s discus record with a throw of 30.32m.
Jessica Hewson created a new under 14s 100m record with a time of 13.4 seconds.
Talosaga Kia broke the under 15s shot put record with a throw of 12.29m.
Camryn Newton-Smith broke the under 16s 100m record with a time of 13.5 seconds.
She also broke the under 16s 200m hurdles record with a time of 31.8 seconds.
Tianah List also created two new records.
She took out the under 17s shot put with a throw of 10.67m and created a new record in the triple jump, reaching a length of 9.44m.
Jimboomba Little Athletics centre manager Peta Smith congratulated all the athletes on their achievements.
