POLICE from the Logan district and surrounding areas have ascended on Emmaus College to take an intensive training course in relation to police powers.
More than 120 police from areas including Logan, Jimboomba, Crestmead and St George attended the three-day training course.
It included refreshers on police powers, fatigue management, drug testing drivers, searching motor vehicles and traffic enforcement for cars and heavy vehicles.
Jimboomba Police officer in charge Senior Sergeant Peter Waugh said it was important for police to remain up to date in their training.
“Policing is a continuous learning process from the day you are sworn in to the last day of your service,” he said.
“It is imperative that we continue to learn with the changes with the process of legislation and with the changes of policing directions.”
He said Emmaus College was the perfect place to hold the training sessions and hoped to continue the partnership in the future.
“The school has been sensational and we would like to utilise their facilities for a long time to come,” he said.
Police minister Jo-Ann Miller attended the training session on Tuesday and said road safety was high on the agenda.
“It is very important for police to keep up their training at all times,” she said.
Minister Miller said this was the first time this type of training was available for officers in the Logan district.
She praised Emmaus College for opening up its facilities for the police training.
“This is a wonderful partnership for the police and the school to undertake.
The minister, concerned about road safety, urged drivers to follow the road rules.
“We have had too many people who have lost their lives on the roads,” she said.
“We need to keep enforcing the message that if you are doing the wrong thing you are breaking the law and police are there to make sure that laws are not broken.
She said police who were conducting random breath testing in the future could also be testing drivers for drugs.
“Police who go out with alcohol testing kits these days, will also go out with drug testing kits as well,” she said.
