MUNRUBEN drag racer Bill Goonan has his methanol fuelled top door slammer ready to go for the Winternationals event at Willowbank Raceway from June 4 to 7.
Goonan and his B&M custom trailers team will take their Chevy Camaro up against 19 other top doorslammer entries at the nationals in what Goonan said will be the toughest event yet.
“We were eighth last year, this year is 20 cars and I reckon the cut-off time will be 5.90 seconds,” he said.-
“It will be a tough field probably the toughest I’ve seen in Winternationals.”
Goonan said the 70.5 Camaro is unique to the Australian drag racing circuit.
“I’ve had it for two years, it’s the only one of its kind in Australia,” he said.
“It’s a 70.5 Camaro where as a lot of the other guys have 68 Fords, Holdens or Camaros, we went with the 70.5 as its more aerodynamic style body, I love to be different and stand out more.”
Goonan’s current best is 6.0 seconds which equates to a speed of 240 miles per hour or 370kms an hour a time he set at last years’ Winternationals.
But with a new crew chief on board he is confident of improvement on that time this year.
“We have got a new crew chief who is a local as well, Steve Ham from New Beith, he won the top alcohol championship last year,” he said.
“We are looking to run 5.80 seconds at Winters this year and will be testing at the warm-ups the weekend previous.”
Goonan said he couldn’t compete without the support of his sponsors B&M custom trailers, Mulford Plastic, the B Belt and Big Red Custom Fabrications but added co-owner and partner Michelle James is also vital.
The 5.21 cubic inch engine and the help of his team has Goonan well placed for a good showing at the Winternationals.
