TRAFFIC lights and a speed limit reduction are not the answer for the Camp Cable Road and Mt Lindesay Highway intersection according to Division 11 Councillor Trevina Schwarz.
The state government is urgently investigating the intersection following this month's fatal accident at the corner.
The investigation will be done in conjunction with a wider Mt Lindesay Highway safety review, the results of which will lead to $5 million worth of "safety improvements" on the highway's highest priority sections.
Cr Schwarz said the Camp Cable Road intersection however, needed not just a quick fix but a whole intersection upgrade.
"This is a highway, they certainly wouldn't be doing that (traffic lights) on the Pacific Highway, they certainly wouldn't be doing that on the Warrego Highway," she said.
Cr Schwarz said the intersection had to keep up with development and population growth in the area.
She said unfavourable intersections like Camp Cable Road put lives at risk and this would only get worse as traffic volumes increased.
"Yes we certainly do need considerable upgrades to the intersections (but) lights and slip lanes are not going to suffice to protect lives," she said.
"In the longer term, most definitely we need the dual lanes, we need the overpasses and we need the funding for that.
"It is a highway, it's not a trunk road and it's being treated now as if it is a trunk road (and) that creates a lot more frustration for a lot of the drivers."
Cr Schwarz said she would be speaking with state and federal members about her concerns.
"I will continue advocating to both the state and federal governments and Main Roads, supporting the infrastructure that we do need," she said.
"The statistics are there, it is a very unsafe corridor, every time that you hear there is an accident on the Mt Lindesay Highway it gives you goosebumps... you know it is going to be very serious."
