A SECTION of Greenbank Road at North Maclean will be closed for reconstruction from Monday, March 2, leaving businesses wondering how they will survive.
The businesses on the corner of Greenbank Road and the Mt Lindesay Highway had no input and little warning of the impending works which were expected to start before the end of the month.
The works will maintain access to the businesses from the highway but will prevent through traffic from Scotts Lane and Greenbank Road for about six weeks.
Division 11 Councillor Trevina Schwarz said attempting to maintain the flow of traffic around the road's sharp and narrow turns had been deemed too difficult.
"The dogleg on Greenbank Road requires significant work, there's a lot of traffic using that portion of the road and if they were trying to keep that road open it would cause even more inconvenience to residents and businesses," she said.
"It would take a lot longer than six weeks."
Oasis Landscaping and Building Supplies' Mick Doyle said he had only recently purchased the business and was unsure if he would survive the road closure.
"How can they come and say in 10 days we're going to close the road? They might as well close us down as well," he said.
"I honestly don't know whether we will survive."
Owner of Highway Water Tanks Ian Bryer said more than 50 per cent of his customer base came from Greenbank Road.
"You know how hard times are now," he said.
"If you're having six weeks or more you're just going to lose your customer base altogether."
Mr Bryer said he wanted council's help to get the word out to customers that the businesses are open for business.
Stage two of the pavement rehabilitation is expected to start in May.
It will include improvements to the road and shoulder width and drainage along a straight stretch of Greenbank Road from the highway to near 818 Greenbank Road.
