A PASSION for helping others in his community has led Sam Escobar to be the 2015 Logan Young Citizen of the Year.
In 2012, Mr Escobar co-founded Logan Metro Football Club.
Since then he has worked extensively with the refugee community in the city.
The club now incudes two senior men’s teams, one senior women’s team and the under 18s Opportunities Academy team with players representing more than 20 cultural backgrounds.
The club assists refugees to build links with the Logan community, as well as genuine friendships – and, of course, some great footy.
Mr Escobar, also a radio announcer, said he loved working with the club and that it was going from strength to strength.
“There’s such a lot of talent here, and we have been doing really well,” he said.
“It’s been so great to see the club grow and everyone involved with it get so much out of it.”
He said for people who are newly arrived to the country, sport provided a perfect, universal way to break down barriers.
“I think just being around people and seeing Australian sportsmanship at its best, getting out there and having fun can make a big difference to someone who may be unfamiliar with the culture,” he said.
“It’s a great supportive club and we are seeing some excellent players coming through as well.”
