SENIOR Sergeant Peter Waugh has some big shoes to fill this month as he steps into the role left vacant by departing Jimboomba Police Senior Sergeant Bill Sheehan.
But the Jimboomba local says he is excited to take on the challenge.
Senior Sergeant Waugh officially took over the reins of the Jimboomba Police Station last Monday, January 12.
He said his first week on the beat had been busy, but productive learning the ins and outs of the station and his new team of police.
"Bill's done a great job, he's built a great platform here to work from," Senior Sergeant Waugh said.
"I am hoping to continue the good work he has done in this community."
Senior Sergeant Waugh said he joined the Queensland Police Service at the age of 17, 30 years ago.
He has worked in the Logan Police District for 28 years and been Officer in Charge of the Logan Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU) since 2006.
"The (Logan) police region has changed dramatically since I first started," he said.
"Back then we had just two police at Slacks Creek, two in Beenleigh and two for Woodridge.
"I've also seen the Jimboomba area grow from a country town to one of the fastest growing areas in the state.
"There are certainly more challenges for police now and more calls for service, that will be one of the toughest parts of this job."
Senior Sergeant Waugh said the highlight of his career was working with the CPIU.
"Child protection work is always challenging, but to be in a position where you are helping people is rewarding," he said.
"This role will be different, I've got big shoes to fill, but I'm looking forward to it."
