TWO Jimboomba Little Athletics members will take part in their first international competition next week.
Emily Schonfisch and Camryn Newton-Smith will fly to New Zealand on Sunday as part of Little Athletics Queensland's 2015 New Zealand development tour.
The 14-year-olds will compete against the South Island's top athletes aged 14 to 16 in two competitions over the 10-day tour.
Camryn will compete in the javelin, 80 metre hurdles and long jump events, while Emily will race in the 800 metre, 1500 metre and triple jump.
As the state champion in javelin and hurdles, Camryn is aiming to place in the top three of the competition.
"Javelin is my strongest event, I have been throwing in the low 40s (metres), and my aim is to improve my personal best distances," she said.
"We don't know how strong the New Zealand competition will be but it's really great to have the opportunity to come up against them."
Emily said she was also hoping to improve her personal best times at the competitions.
"It's not so much about placing but more about improving my own times as I was injured in a car accident recently and am just coming back from that," she said.
Although the team will train for up to three hours every day, there will also be time for some fun.
Both girls said they were excited about visiting New Zealand and looking forward to touring the chocolate factory in Dunedin and going on a jet boat ride in Queenstown.
